ESS-Bilbao takes the lead in the international R&D activity towards the design review of the European Spallation Source
The “ESS-Bilbao Initiative Workshop - Multi-MW Spallation Neutron Sources: Current Challenges and Future Prospects” held at Bilbao last 16-19 March succeeded to put together 160 worldwide experts on high-power proton accelerators, beam dynamics and Spallation targets. During the workshop several discussion groups reviewed the challenges faced in different programmes with relevance to high power spallation neutron sources and suggested a base design of R&D projects in order to achieve in a reliable way the ESS design parameters. The recommendations from the expert groups endorse the current efforts endeavored by the ESS-Bilbao team to make the 2003 ESS baseline compatible with the latest developments within the field of high power proton accelerators. The current activities at ESS-Bilbao include prototyping of the newly designed superconducting cavities, a novel high-power target design and detailed accelerator beam dynamics studies. For a brief description of the ESS-Bilbao concept as well as the electromagnetic design studies for the double and triple-spoke resonators see: http://workshop2009.essbilbao.com/cas/wshopdoc/4.pdf
